Professional Bio

Katie Clayton is an experienced educator and academic leader serving as the Head of Lower School at Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. With a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Clemson University and a Master’s in Advanced Studies in Reading from Converse University, she has a strong literacy and curriculum development foundation.

Before joining Spartanburg Day School, Katie taught for four years in Charleston County schools, where she developed a passion for inquiry-based teaching models in a math and science magnet school. While she has a strong passion for math and science education, her commitment to literacy education is evident in her active participation in professional development. She has been interviewed for a session at The Reading League South Carolina's 2nd Saturday Series, where she shared insights on implementing curriculum based on the Science of Reading at her school. She is also an active collaborator with Wofford College’s growing education department, working closely with faculty and students to support the ongoing development of innovative curriculum. Through this partnership, she regularly hosts undergraduate and graduate students and community members, creating a dynamic environment for exchanging ideas and best practices. These collaborative efforts strengthen teacher preparation and curriculum design and foster a broader professional learning community dedicated to educational excellence and global-minded teaching.

Her dedication to fostering curiosity and a love for learning in her students and teachers reflects her belief in the power of education and the importance of a growth mindset.
